What a Typical Day is Like on the Tour
What
The Trips Entail
Students and chaperones will meet
the NIEP Courier at the airport or another designated location
to begin the tour. If the tour involves flying on an airplane,
the students are required to bring picture identification. The
group will then travel together with the NIEP Courier to meet
the NIEP charter bus. Once everyone is seated on the charter bus,
the NIEP Courier begins the group introductions.
First, the NIEP Courier talks about his/her background, then each
student introduces him/herself. Next, the NIEP Courier gives the
students an overview of the trip and goes over the contents of
the folders that are given to them at the beginning of the trip.
In each folder, the student will find helpful articles for their
college searches, a description of each college they will be visiting
on the tour, scribing sheets for obtaining information
about each school, and a Tour Evaluation Form, which will be completed
at the end of the tour.

Two "Scribes" are then
chosen by the NIEP Courier for each college. These two Scribes
are then assigned the responsibility of completing the scribing
sheet in order to get specific information about the schools (i.e.
number of undergraduate students, ethnic breakdown, if a car is
needed or permitted, access to computer facilities, etc.). To
obtain the information, the two Scribes will ask questions to
either the Admissions Officers or the Campus Tour Guides presenting
at each college.
When the Group arrives at each school, the students will attend
a presentation given by the Admissions Office, Financial Aid Office,
or the EOP program. Following this, the Group will then go on
a tour of the campus usually led by a college student tour guide.
After the tour is completed, the students will usually eat a meal
on campus with other students or have time to visit the Student
Bookstore. The group then boards the bus to travel to the next
college.
During the bus ride between colleges, the two Scribes will report
back to the rest of the group the information they have gathered
on their scribing sheets. At the same time, each student will
have their own scribing sheets in front of them to write the information
down so by the end of the tour all the students will have the
notes for each school. After the Scribes are finished, each student
will stand up, rate the college they just visited on a scale from
1 - 5 (1=poor, 5=great), then each student will say what they
liked and didnt like about the campus they just visited.
Our program strongly emphasizes this peer-to-peer interaction
between the students.
After visiting the last school of the day, the charter bus will
depart to a hotel (or residence hall) for the evening. Students
are given time to unpack, then the Group will meet up for the
day's wrap-up session. The NIEP Courier goes over the day's events
and the next day's itinerary so the students will know what to
expect.
The NIEP Courier will also discuss the evening's activities and
set the time for Bed Checks and Lights Out.
The first night, the NIEP Courier will also discuss expectations
of the students in terms of their behavior at the hotel and when
the Group is out in public during the evenings. Students may be
expelled from the trip for disruptive behavior, and all additional
charges will be assessed to the student or his/her family.
Supervision
Bed Checks and Lights Out times are determined by the NIEP Courier
and the Chaperones on the trip. Because each day's schedule is
different, there is not a set time every night. The students are
given a time when they have to be in their own rooms (Bed Checks),
and then a time that the NIEP Courier will go to each room to
make sure everyone is their rooms and in bed (Lights Out). Wake-up
calls are done by the hotel operator, with a follow-up call done
by the NIEP Courier in the morning.
Touring the area around a campus is a very important aspect of
the NIEP trips. The students are taken to places with activities
(like shopping and eating) that they may do in groups. They are
given boundaries of where they can and cannot go. For example,
they are told that they are limited to a certain street boundaries
or to the campus grounds if the Group is staying at a campus that
night. Students must go in a group with a minimum of four people
and with the chaperones in the vicinity, or with the entire group
(unless noted on the Parent Permission Slip during the Registration
Process).
Medication
If a student is taking prescription medication, they must note
the type of medication on the Student Registration Form. Also,
the student must hand over the medication to the NIEP Courier
at the beginning of the trip. The NIEP Courier will then disperse
the medication as needed to the student throughout the duration
of the trip. NIEP also requires each student to have insurance
information with them before they are allowed to travel with the
group.
