About Us
Located in Newport, California, the National Institute for Educational Planning was started by Mark Corkery to help high school students prepare for college.
College Counseling
Mark Corkery is the President and founder of the 23 year old Newport Beach-based College Focus. He holds a Master’s in Education from Harvard University, and has 27 years of experience in higher education academic counseling, teaching, and college planning. He served 5 years at Boston University, providing admission, and academic counseling. Mr. Corkery has visited over 525 colleges nationwide.
Mike Lyons is the College Counselor in the Newport Beach Office. He has over 15 years of extensive research, training, counseling, and advising experience. Mr. Lyons most recently worked as the Director of International Student Services at the American University of Beirut. Mr. Lyons holds a Master’s in International Education with an emphasis in Cross Cultural Counseling from the School for International Training and BA in Humanities from San Diego State University.
Ivan Hauck is the College Counselor in the Diamond Bar office of College Focus. Ivan served as a College Counselor for TRiO: Upward Bound program. Mr. Hauck worked as a tutor and counselor coordinator with the California Student Opportunity and Access Program. He has 6 years of experience working with high school students including the college admissions process. Ivan holds a BA in Sociology from UC Berkeley, and a MA in College Counseling and Student Affairs from the University of San Diego.
Serena Elliott is the College Counselor in the Pasadena, and Diamond Bar offices. Before coming to College Focus, Serena worked in College Counseling at Marlborough School in Los Angeles; a prestigious girl’s school with 100% 4-year college placement rate. She holds a BA in both History and English from UC Berkeley.
Heather Jacobus is the College Counselor in the Diamond Bar and Cerritos office. For the last year, Heather worked as a tutor, mentor, and academic counselor with the athletes at University of San Diego. She also advised college students on career exploration at Cal State San Marcos. Heather holds a BS from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and an MA in Counseling with an emphasis in Career Counseling from the University of San Diego.
Christina Romero is the College Counselor in the Pasadena and West LA offices. She holds a Master’s of Education in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University, and a BA from University of Notre Dame. Christina most recently was the Director of Guidance and College Counseling at the Renaissance Academy Charter High School. She also served as the Director of College Counseling at St. Michael’s Academy.
Reid Warner is the College Counselor in the Newport Beach office. He is also currently the Manager of Travel Study Programs at UC Irvine. Most recently, Reid was the Assistant Director of Student Affairs at Yale University School of Medicine. Reid holds an Ed.M in Higher Education Administration from Harvard University, and a BA from Dartmouth College.
Administration
Christina Kim is the Special Events Coordinator and Staff Assistant in the Newport Beach, and West LA offices of College Focus. Christina holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Cognitive Science from UC Irvine.
Han Yuan “Hannie” Chia is the Special Events Coordinator and Staff Assistant in the Diamond Bar and Pasadena offices. Before coming to College Focus, she served as a consultant with The J. Paul Getty Museum’s Department of Photography. Hannie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from Scripps College.
Janice Choi is the Staff Assistant in the Cerritos office of College Focus.
Internships and Career Resource
Evelyn Jurucan is the Career Resource Specialist who assists high school students to find summer programs, community service opportunities, and scholarship programs. She also provides career tests to students and helps them to explore, evaluate, and choose a major for college. Evelyn holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services from Cal State Fullerton.
